I was living in L.A. back in 2002, working at Mike Young Productions. Andrew Young (Mike’s son and basically the black sheep of the family) and I had gone renegade. What started out as mucking around in the evenings had gotten out of control – we called ourselves ‘Crappy Cartoons‘ and found ourselves developing a new animation series for TV.
It was essentially M*A*S*H for kids but instead of incoming helicopters a dump truck would turn up and in the tradition of Bagpuss any discarded broken toys would be rescued and fixed. Each episode we’d learn how the toys got broken and why they were thrown away. I did all the character designs for the show. We made a pilot that I was never really happy with but I did make a little video introducing each of the main characters… which I was very proud of – I’ve dug it out – although I could only find a super low resolution version of it. Andrew did the sound edit – I learnt the basics of After Effects. Oh yeah, the show was called “Dumped!” – The espionage plants were gonna be so much fun… one of them was going to have the voice of Roger Moore and the other Sean Connery!
I really hope the Beta Band are cool with me sharing this video – it was never meant for broadcast, only as a pitch. We never got permission to use the track – Round the Bend! I’m a massive fan! I was really excited to see they’ve just re-pressed The Three E.P.’s which will be available on Friday 11th July 2025 ! I’d definitely buy it if i didn’t already have their first three albums on vinyl already!
