I was delighted to receive this limited addition (1 of 40) tape cassette of William’s Bathtime Delights from the South London based duo, Jef Jimps. Complete with a two sided lyric sheet and a handmade cover made from sticky letters that apparently once in full production flow, only took ten minutes each to produce – which I thought was pretty good going! The gorgeous turquoise cassette is made from recycled plastics and was especially cut to length to match the album playtime which comes in at aprox 39 minutes and 7 seconds.
I’m very proud to have a cassette player in my Micra K11 and was able to listen just as soon as I could. Once I got started on this musical merry-go-round and I didn’t want to get off. I found myself playing and flipping the tape back to back on my trip home from London via Bristol. Epic sound landscapes slip in and out of break beat, dreamy techno and hippy folk, with echoes of 1960s psychedelia. This short play LP is a treasure trove of sketches and playful tunes and lyrics that will keep you amused and guessing – it’ll take you inside and outside of yourself and back again.
When I first put the tape into my cranky old player – which loves to fast-forward rather than play – I started my musical journey from somewhere in the middle of the b-side. At first, I was devastated, thinking the tape was being eaten. But no – it was just a tune folding in on itself and some deliberate stretchy tape effects. The sound is both rich, sophisticated, deep, well produced and trashy: sweeping, synthesised melodies that never overindulge, never overstay their welcome, with breaks and surprises on every corner… always leaving you wanting more. Just like the lovingly handcrafted cover, the music on this recycled tape is built with care. It’s an inspiration – taking me everywhere and nowhere all at once, in the most wonderful way.

Jeff Jimps takes you to the club, then takes you home again on the night bus and then on the back of his bike. He gets you stoned, tucks you in and wakes you up with a cup of tea. He may have given you the hangover but it was worth it and he’s here to help you come back down.
